How did the event go?

Niagara College Event Management students kicked off the 18th annual year of the Many Hands project, with the inaugural League of Legends Niagara Tournament hosted at the Niagara College Welland Campus. This event is the first of four fundraising events hosted by the Event Management program.

The League of Legends Niagara Tournament took place  on Saturday March 7th, 2015. Tournament play began at noon in the Learning Commons with 90 participants, creating 18 teams that were divided into two tiers based on a League of Legends player ranking system. This tournament provided current players of the game, within Ontario, the opportunity to participate at a local tournament in the Niagara Region. It also provided players the chance to network and interact with others within their gaming community. Spectators were able to witness competitive League of Legends tournament play throughout the day, as well as enjoy game-themed food and beverages, door prizes, and cosplay photo opportunities at the Welland campus bar, The Core.

All proceeds from this event contributed to the Many Hand Project recipient, Strive Niagara. Strive Niagara is a non-profit, social service organization that provides child care, outreach and other resources and support for young families in need who are pursuing an education. The event was held for the sole purpose of raising a minimum of $2,500 for The Many Hands Project. The League of Legends Niagara Tournament exceeded the fundraising expectations raising over $4,000, proving that gaming can encourage positive change within the community.

The Many Hands Project is a student-driven renovation project executed by students in the Event Management and Construction Studies programs at Niagara College. Each year, one local non-profit organization is chosen by the Many Hands Committee to receive their assistance. Together, the students plan and execute the entire process including; completing the desired renovations, involving the community through volunteer recruitment, and raising awareness for the non-profit organization. This year’s recipient is Strive.

The Strive Niagara building will undergo a range of renovations to physically improve the facility. Some of the improvements include: changes to the existing reception area, main entry corridor, a new waiting area and new flooring in the childcare area. Areas of the building will receive new paint, lighting, ceiling and floor tiles. The project is scheduled to be complete by April 18, 2015.
